AN AUTOMATIC PROGRAM FOR THE INTERPRETATION OF TWO-DIMENSIONAL GRAVITY AND MAGNETIC ANOMALIES by ALEXANDER WAGINI Open-File Report Prepared in cooperation with the Nevada Operations Office U. Department of Energy (Interagency Agreement DE-AIET)Author: Alexander Wagini.

Get this from a library. An automatic program for the interpretation of two-dimensional gravity and magnetic anomalies. [Alexander Wagini; United States. Department of Energy. Nevada Operations Office.; Geological Survey (U.S.)]. Direct methods for the interpretation of gravity and magnetic field anomalies have been developed and applied to interpret marine geophysical surveys of the Caribbean eastern margin and the Sierra Leone continental shelf.

The gravity interpretation programs compute, under certain constraints to remove inherent ambiguity, the space form of the body producing a specified gravity. The magnetic and gravity field produced by a given homogeneous source are related through Poisson's equation.

Starting from this consideration, it is shown that some 2D interpretation tools, widely applied in the analysis of aeromagnetic data, can also be used for the interpretation of gravity gradiometric data (vertical gradient).

Automatic determination of the magnetization–density ratio and magnetization inclination from the joint interpretation of 2D gravity and magnetic anomalies the Poisson conditions), this theorem provides suitable relationships between the gravity and magnetic anomalies that are useful in interpreting the related data sets.

Gravity anomalies originate from any subsurface density contrast.e.g. intrusions, faults, basin boundaries, salt diapirs, etc. The quantitative interpretation of magnetic anomalies aims at finding out the location, depth, dip, size, and susceptibility contrast of causative geological sources.

In this paper an easy method of interpreting magnetic anomalies over simple geometric shapes of dyke, sheet and vertical step has been proposed by using the easily recognisable characteristic positions on the magnetic Cited by: 3. This paper develops an automatic method for interpretation of magnetic data using derivatives of the analytic signal. A linear equation is derived to provide source location parameters of a 2D magnetic body without a priori information about the nature of the source.

Then using the source location parameters, the nature of the source can be by: The interpretation of a gravity anomaly in terms of the shape of the anomalous body is a non‐linear problem and may, therefore, be carried out using non‐linear optimisation techniques.
